Two turf samples can look identical in the hand and behave completely differently after five Texas summers. The difference is on the spec sheet, and most of it comes down to four numbers and one word. This is how to read them, using the published figures for the lines we install.
Face weight
The weight of the fiber alone, measured per square yard. It tells you how densely the pile is packed before the backing is counted at all, and it is the number that predicts wear resistance, pile recovery and how the lawn looks in year seven. Across our range it runs from 53 oz on Signature 50 to 84 oz on Estate 84, with The Reserve at 80 oz.
Total weight
Fiber and backing together. It is a useful read on the structural integrity of the finished roll, but it is not interchangeable with face weight: a thin pile over a heavy backing can post a strong total weight and still be light where it counts. Ask for both, separately. Signature 50 is 80 oz total, The Reserve 107 oz, Estate 84 111 oz.
Pile height
How tall the blade stands. It is set by the job, not by quality. The lawn lines run 1.5 to 2.0 in for a full, natural look, while both putting surfaces sit at 0.63 in, because a ball has to roll across them.
Fiber
The word that matters is the polymer. Polyethylene runs cooler than Olefin and springs back upright after foot traffic, which is why the premium lines state a pure PE face: Signature 50 is 100% pure PE, The Reserve is 100% pure PE with zero Olefin, and Estate 84 is a soft-touch PE. The putting surfaces use a textured Poly or a tournament-grade nylon instead, chosen for ball roll rather than feel.
Backing
The layer the fibers are stitched into, and the layer that decides how water leaves. Backing thickness is part of the structural story, not a substitute for fiber density. The pet line, K9 Guard Ultra, uses a full flow-through backing; the lawn lines use double PP with PU, or a heavy PU.
Spec weight is the proxy
Spec weight is the single most reliable proxy for long-term performance on both commercial and residential installs. If a quote does not state face weight and total weight separately, ask for the spec sheet before comparing prices.
