Artificial Turf for Dogs: The Three Things That Actually Matter

A dog does three things to a lawn that a family does not: it uses the same spot every day, it digs, and it leaves urine behind. A turf built for dogs is answering those three things, and you can see the answers on the spec sheet. Here is what to look for, using K9 Guard Ultra, the pet line we install, as the example.

1. Backing: where the water goes

Face weight matters less on a pet lawn than it does on a show lawn. Drainage and infill matter more. K9 Guard Ultra runs a full flow-through backing rather than punched holes, so liquid leaves through the whole surface instead of a grid of drainage holes. The backing is pet-safe, and the surface has no sharp edges or loose fibers, so it is safe for paws, noses and bare feet.

2. Infill: where the odor is handled

The infill is the layer that decides whether a dog yard smells. K9 Guard Ultra uses a three-layer system, ZeoFill, then Envirofill, then ZeoFill, an antimicrobial infill that resists odors and bacteria. Our sixth installation step applies specialized infill, antimicrobial odor-control for pets, and then power-brushes the fibers to stand upright.

3. Fiber: what survives the traffic

K9 Guard Ultra uses a heavyweight PE fiber. Polyethylene springs back after foot traffic, and on a pet lawn the same strip of turf takes the same route every day, so recovery is what keeps the run from matting into a path.

Keeping it clean

Solid waste comes up as it would on grass. Liquid drains through. For the rest, our maintenance work includes deep cleaning with enzymatic sanitization for pet areas, power brooming to lift matted fibers, and re-infilling to top up settled ballast. If you would rather do the routine care yourself, our maintenance guide covers it.

The warranty

K9 Guard Ultra carries a 15-year material warranty, the same as the lawn lines. The full specification and spec sheet are on the turf range page, and the pet installation itself is described on our pet turf page.
