Turf is only as good as what is underneath it. The fibers are what you see, but the base is what decides whether the surface is still flat, dry and level in year seven. This critical phase determines the longevity of your turf installation, which is why it is heavy labor and ground engineering rather than a quick scrape and lay.
Layer one: excavation
Remove vegetation and debris, digging 3-4 inches deep to establish the proper structural depth for the Texas climate. Everything that used to be lawn comes out; the base needs room, and organic material left underneath will rot and sink.
Layer two: base construction
Install compacted Flex Base topped with decomposed granite (DG) to create a stable, non-shifting foundation that remains fully permeable. Compaction is what stops the surface settling into dips; the DG on top gives a smooth, gradable surface to lay onto. It is a concrete-hard, permeable surface: solid enough not to move, open enough to let water through.
Layer three: drainage
Manage utility lines, sleeve irrigation pipes, and precision grade the sub-base to ensure water flows away from your home foundation. Conduit sleeves go in now for anything you might want later, because nothing is easier to add once the turf is down.
Layer four: weed prevention
Install commercial-grade heavy duty weed barrier to separate the native soil from the base and prevent vegetative growth. Weeds that still appear later are surface germination in the infill, which is a maintenance job, not a base failure.
Then the turf
Only now is the turf unrolled to acclimate, precision-cut around hardscaping, trees and borders, seamed, secured and infilled. The whole six-step sequence is on our services page. Before any of it starts, the site assessment identifies hazards like reflective windows, drainage needs and gopher activity requiring protection, so the base is designed for the yard it is going into rather than a generic one.
